A cyclist taking part in last week’s SA National Road Championships in the Wellington/Windmeul area was run down by a truck while on route.
The incident took place on Wednesday 8 February when Paul Meinking was taking part in the Men’s 60-64 Time Trial event.
Although the cycling route had been clearly marked as a go slow zone due to the event, the driver of a heavy vehicle clearly ignored these warning signs and turned across the path of the rider into a nearby property. He then attempted to reverse back out of the driveway when he struck the on- coming cyclist.
Meinking was assisted immediately by race emergency personal and taken to the nearest hospital.
He is in a stable condition.
