The past two weeks have been nothing short of devastating for the family and friends of the talented young Bongiswa Majikijela (23) who was shot and killed by her estranged husband last week while waiting for a taxi on the Old Paarl Road.
Not only did her 7-year-old daughter Odwa lose her mother, but both her parents, when her father, Andile Madlathu (32) shot himself minutes later.
As she had been abused by her husband, Bongiswa had acquired an interdict against him and was living with her mother at Fair Valley, Paarl South, when the tragedy occurred.
Since the murder, both Odwa and Bongi’s mother, Noandile have struggled to come to terms with the tragedy.
Promising to always look out for Odwa, Bongi’s friend and fellow Matie-graduate Danielle Louw, submitted a letter to KFM’s Christmas Wish, explaining the family’s ordeal.
Herein she writes that Bongi’s “biggest dream” was to offer Odwa a “good education and all the opportunities in life”.
The gripping tale immediately caught the attention of the KFM team who reached out to all major sponsors.
Without hesitation, Pick n Pay pledged to provide the family with groceries for a year and all of Odwa’s back-to-school requirements. ABSA will open a trust for the 7-year-old and provide R30 000 to ensure she stays in school. Anyone willing and able can also contribute towards the fund.
@Home committed to giving Odwa the room of her dreams to the value of R16 000, while Spur Steak Ranches has offered the family meal vouchers.
KFM’s Breakfast show host, Ryan O’Connor called Noandile on Friday morning with the news.
- Bongi graduated with a degree in Drama and Theatre Studies from the University of Stellenbosch in 2014, and was working as an agent for the talent search agency, ArtistOne, in Observatory, Cape Town.
Her funeral will take place Saturday 17 December in Mount Frere, Eastern Cape.
