Superb season for Murray

The first block of the 2017 racing season has been a very successful one for Richard Murray from Durbanville.

The South African triathlete finished second recently in the WTS Gold Coast race in Australia. Murray’s time for the sprint distance race was 52 minutes and 39 seconds. Mario Mola won in 52:35 and his Spanish countryman Fernando Alarza took the last spot on the winner’s podium (52:44). It was a great return to Australia for Murray who broke his collarbone in this race 12 months ago.

“I am happy with how it went on the day. I had a great swim, coming out of the water within the top 15 or so. The body reacted well despite all the racing I’ve been doing thus far. I tried to go with Mario in the final stretch to the finish, but he is in great form. He is also going for his second world title. I don’t think my race last weekend had an impact today, but form-wise Mario is just a bit sharper I think. I am satisfied with how the start of the season is going. It is probably the best start to a year I have ever had.”

Murray is calling 2017 the season of having fun and thus far he is having a blast. He won two World Cup races – Cape Town and New Plymouth – and the South African Xterra Championships. He was also victorious in the inaugural Super League Triathlon, while he finished fifth in the first race of the WTS season in Abu Dhabi.

Murray is now off to the Specialized Headquarters in Morgan Hill, California, for some testing to help him prepare for his first 70.3 race in June. He will return to South Africa for a few weeks in April before heading off to Europe to make his 70.3 debut in the Slovakia Half Ironman race.
