Reading the front page of Paarl Post (Thursday, 23 April 2015), it reminded us again of what happened the past week in the South African Police Service, with alleged corrupt senior officials implicating the Provincial Police Commissioner and other senior officers in the Western Cape.
As a young boy my path crossed with the SAPS at a very young age (11 years old) and being passionate about the police service led me to meet with MECs, provincial police commissioners and working with various station commanders.
One station commander stood out above the rest and that was the former Paarl Police Station Commander, Brig Tiyo. Being mentored by Brig Tiyo for one year during 2007/8, I got to know a very good leader – a man passionate about the police. Still hearing his voice the day when all Paarl Police members were operational and I, together with other members were driving into the police yard, asking us in Afrikaans: “Wat soek julle mense hier binne, moet julle nie daar buite wees nie?”
With him asking us this, it made me realise, with the vision of this man, crime can only be prevented, addressed and investigated properly, and the Station Commander of the Year Award is proof of that
