Rieldansers, animation, music and poetry

FynArts Festival boasts a wide variety of performances, music concerts, talks and film screenings.

• The second half of the festival has a top class line-up that includes the first one-woman show for FynArts, Gcina Mhlophe with My Travelling Bag. The master storyteller packs 33 years of international travel into her travelling bag which forms part of the performance. With her show Mhlophe celebrates who we are as South Africans. Thursday 15 June; Time: 19:00; Venue: Municipal Auditorium.

• If you love music of the Swinging 60s be sure not to miss out the performance by Lynelle Kennedy and Brandon Phillips on Saturday 17 June at 19:00 at the Dutch Reformed Church in Hermanus.

• The Ian Smith Big Band will close this year’s festival with a rousing concert on Sunday 18 June at 14:00 at the Dutch Reformed Church in Hermanus. The band is made up of top musicians from the Delft Big Band and other professional musicians. Soloists will be Ian Smith on trumpet and Adelia Douw who performed at last Saturday’s Diva’s concert.

• More than 50 young musicians of the Strings Project of the Enlighten Education Trust and the Ifidyoli Ensemble of the Beau Soleil Music Centre in Cape Town have joined forces to present Strings Delight on Friday 16 June at 12:30 at the Anglican Church in Hermanus.

• Patrons can look forward to a Organ Recital on Saturday 17 June at 12:30 at the Dutch Reformed Church in Hermanus. Louna Stofberg on the organ will be accompanied by Pieter-Adriaan Stofberg on cello and Jenna O’Neill playing the violin.

• The last speakers in the Stephan Welz Series of Talks and Presentations are Charl du Plessis (Cross Over Music); Dikgang Moseneke who will be in conversation with Christopher Hope (My Own Liberator as well as present a Q&A Breakfast talk on Constitutional Matters); John Parkington (Rock Art of the Western Cape) and Patricia Glyn (Dawid’s Return).

• Two South African films, U-Carmen and Sugarman, will be screened. Director Mark Dornford May will be present at the first viewing to answer questions from the audience while Craig Bartholomew Strydom, co-author of the book, will be present at the latter.

• The ATKV has sponsored showings of Filmverse 2, featuring poetry, animation art, voice art and music. Twelve Afrikaans poems were animated by animation artists and the soundtracks dubbed into English, Zulu and Sesotho. Complimentary screenings will be held on Friday 16 June at 11:00 at the Youth Cafe in Zwelihle and at 14:00 at the Municipal Auditorium.

• Three short, exciting and energetic Rieldans performances by the winning group Betjies of Bettjesfontein have been brought to FynArts with the compliments of the ATKV. The group will perform at 11:00; 12:00 and 14:00 on the grass in front of the Whale Museum. In the event of rain the performances will take place at the Grobbelaar Hall.
