(serves 4)

  • 1 thick slice brown bread
  • 125 ml milk
  • 500 g beef mince
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 4 ml salt
  • freshly ground black pepper to taste
  • about 30 ml sunflower oil
  • 4 slices cheddar
  • 4 sesame seed bread rolls
  • crisp lettuce
  • 2 tomatoes, sliced
  • 1 onion, sliced
  • tomato sauce, to serve

Heat the grill of your oven. Soak the bread in the milk until soft. Combine the mince, chopped onion and bread and season with salt and pepper. Form the patties. Heat the oil in a pan with a heavy base. Fry the patties on both sides. Put a slice of cheese on top of each patty and put them in the oven until the cheese has melted. Cut the bread rolls in half and toast them in the oven on a baking tray. Top each roll with lettuce, then tomato, onion and a patty. Serve with tomato sauce.
