The Volunteer Wildfire Services (VWS) has been combating dangerous and sometimes deadly runaway wildfires in the Cape for 20 years. With more than 200 volunteer members holding the line between fire and fynbos, preparedness is essential. Having a good navigational tool could make a life-changing difference…

Volunteer Wildfire Services firefighter Norman McFarlane recounts his experience using the Land Rover Explore phone during a night training hike in May.

Navigating the veld on foot at night is never easy, especially in freezing rain and strong wind. It’s even harder when you’re wearing full firefighting protection gear and carrying a backpack and hand tool.

“Our hiking route followed the Danie Miller Hiking Trail in Gordon’s Bay, and then turned south up a perilously steep slope, past the well-known ‘GB anchor’ emblem on the mountain side. Navigating with a GPS is all well and good, but it doesn’t show you detailed terrain features,” says Norman.

“Using ViewRanger on the Land Rover Explore phone, with its excellent full GPS capability when using the Adventure Pack, allowed me to download hi-res satellite images before the hike.“

I plotted the entire route beforehand, and thanks to the hi-res satellite images the crew could traverse safely through very steep, sometimes confusing terrain. At one point the route to follow through the craggy, dangerous section at the top of the slope seemed obvious, but closer examination on ViewRanger revealed a much safer line.“

Thanks to the Explore phone we could easily follow the sometimes obscure trail up and over the top, to the gravel road above the Steenbras Lower Dam, and down to the pick-up point at the viewsite at the top of Sir Lowry’s Pass.“
