Art pushes boundaries

Full-time and part-time lecturers at the Department of Design and Studio Art took part in an art exhibition at the Art Hall on the campus of the Central University of Technology (CUT) from 31 October to 5 November.

Yolanda de Kock, the curator of the exhibition, said the title, “Creative Expressions: Shapes, Textures, Processes and Patterns” implored the artists to respond to this theme by addressing different conceptual and technical processes that will initiate the visual metaphor found in an artwork.

Yolanda said the artists pushed their boundaries even further than the previous years by experimenting with existing mediums, using new techniques.

A wide range of mediums were used in the exhibition, including jewellery, photography, sculpture, printmaking, graphic design and stitchwork.

She said current debates about land, gender politics, fragility of life, life cycles and the effect of applied advanced technology on humans have been explored and questioned by this year’s exhibition.

Prof. Frances van Schalkwyk, head of the department, said the exhibition reflected the originality and newness of the artists’ work.

“These creative outputs will serve as a motivation and inspiration for students in our department, to follow in the footsteps of their lecturers to be successful future creatives and innovators.”

Mandie Cronjé, lecturer, said apart from the various full-time courses, the department often do short courses in a variety of subjects, including photography, aimed at the general public.
