Be better every day, says star

Jan-Hendrik Basson (17), a Gr. 12 learner of the Sand du Plessis High School has been chosen as this month’s winner of the Bloemnews Let’s Play Sports Star of the Month for his achievements in karate and cricket.

Jan-Hendrik received his black belt (shodan) in October 2018. He is a student at the Japan Karate Shoto Federation (JKS) Bloemfontein Karate Club, and participated in the JKS National Championships in Johannesburg in May 2018.

He won a gold medal in the kata division and a bronze medal in the kumite division: juniors, brown belt, 16-17 years.

He was also selected for the JKS South African Team to compete at the JKS World Championships in Dublin, Ireland from 21 to 28 August.

Jan-Hendrik’s motto is: “It is not about being better than someone else, it’s about being better than you were the day before.”
