Cyclists gearing up

This year the Mangaung Cycle Tour celebrates four years of uniting cyclists from across the country to take part in the largest road cycle race in central South Africa, under the ownership of the Pedal Power Association (PPA). This year’s event takes place in Bloemfontein on Sunday, 4 November.

Cyclists can get ready for a weekend of cycling in Bloemfontein as the Bloem MTB Challenge will start on Saturday, 3 November.

“We take pride in the Mangaung Cycle Tour as the only premier seeding event in the Free State and encourage all cyclists to participate. All efforts are made to ensure a safe and enjoyable ride for everyone,” said Robert Vogel, PPA chief executive officer.

Participants can enter to ride one of two distances: a 108 km route (which will be used as seeding for the 2019 Cape Town Cycle Tour), or a 30 km route.

The 30 km route is perfect for those looking to ride with family and friends of varying ability. The 108 km, on the other hand, is for the more experienced cyclists and of course for those who are looking to improve their seeding for the 2019 Cape Town Cycle Tour.

Cyclists can expect a fairly flat route with a few unexpected tough climbs.

Partial road closure will be implemented on sections of the route. Route maps and profiles can be found on the Cycle Events entry page.

Last year Jacques Greeff was the first male rider to cross the finishing line in 2:34:18, with Maude Elaine le Roux, a triathlete, taking the first female position with a time of 2:51:27. This year some fast times can be expected again.

The PPA, a public benefit organisation, is committed to encouraging more people to ride bicycles, with a particular focus on utility cycling and youth cycling.

The PPA raises awareness for cyclist safety through its Stay Wider of the Rider campaign.

Profits from the event will be invested in local cycling development projects in the Free State.

Pre-entries are open until 26 October at www.cycleevents.co.za.

Late entries will be taken during registration on Saturday, 3 November from 10:00 to 18:00 at the South African School of Armour at the Tempe Military Base.

For more information, visit www.pedalpower.org.za and go to PPA Events to enter.
