From sand to art . . .

Earthen, an artistic workshop, was presented by master art student Sylvester Mqeku at the Central University of Technology (CUT) to introduce artists and students to the art of sand-casting.

During the workshop that lasted from 21 September until Saturday (06/10), participants learned the three stages of creating artworks by using the methods invented by Sylvester.

The artworks are unique and eye-catching and give students and artists alike a new form of creativity.

Sylvester, a master degree student at the Department of Design and Studio Art, is experimenting with this new art form in which liquid clay is used to capture forms, and to mark and make imprints in damp sand.

He says the wonderful thing about this art form is that it promotes the use of 100% recyclable material.

A total of 26 students took part in the workshop that stretched over a long period due to the waiting time for different processes to be completed.

Pauline van Tonder, an artist working with porcelain, says this is a whole new idea which she finds very interesting.

Another student, Pikkie van der Berg, says she does pottery as a hobby and loves to experiment with different art forms, and enjoyed the sand-casting.

Some of the other students took the course to relax and do something unique.

The workshop was presented in partnership with the Goethe Institute of South Africa as part of the Goethe Institute Project Space which is a multi-disciplinary roving project space, supporting artistic projects across the country.
