Hundreds hone their skills through festival

More than 500 participants registered for the free workshops at the sixth learning festival presented by Bloem Shelter and the University of the Free State (UFS) last week.

Izak Botes, manager at Bloem Shelter, says this yearly festival grows each year and gives more opportunities to people to learn skills and eventually start their own entrepreneurial business.

The festival was held from 4 to 6 September on the UFS’s main campus.

There were more than 50 small workshops, focussing on skills in hairdressing, carpentry, sewing, 3D printing, first aid, music, good recycling practice and many more.

Heidi Morgan, lecturer at the UFS’s Departement of Occupational Therapy, says their involvement in different community projects and the yearly learning festival gives students a lot of hands-on experience in the community.

A new concept called the Gift Box was launched at the festival as a way in which the public can get involved in financially supporting Bloem Shelter.

Botes explains that people who make a donation to Bloemshelter will receive a gift box with presents made by residents of the shelter.

Get involved at Bloem Shelter or receive more information by calling Botes on 082-463-5916.
