Museum fun goes online

International Museum Day is being celebrated this whole week.

Organised on and around 18 May of each year, events and activities planned to celebrate International Museum Day can last for a day, a weekend or a whole week.

This singularly special event on the calendar of the international museum community is organised by the International Council of Museums (Icom) and has been running every year since 1977.

Esther le Roux of the Oliewenhuis Art Gallery says in a press release the aim of the event is to engage with the public within their unique context to highlight the important role of museums as a conduit of service and development in the local community.

“On this day, participating museums plan creative events and activities related to the International Museum Day theme,” states the press release.

The international theme for 2020 is “Equality: Diversity and Inclusion”.

“International Museum Day generates awareness that museums are an important means of cultural exchange, enrichment of cultures and development of mutual understanding, cooperation and peace among peoples.”

The programme of the National Museum in Bloemfontein’s celebrations of International Museum Day, presented together with one of its satellites, the Oliewenhuis Art Museum, started on Monday (18/05) and will run until Friday (22/05).

“We at the National Museum in Bloemfontein are ever-conscious of our responsibility to create meaningful experiences for people of all origins and backgrounds.

“Every person entering a museum should have the opportunity to make a connection, to identify and relate to the diversity on display.”

The programme is being run simultaneously on the Facebook page of the National Museum and that of the Oliewenhuis Art Museum.

Each day is dedicated to a theme and visitors to these pages can look forward to an array of informative posts consisting of articles, live and pre-recorded sessions and slideshows.

Themes include “Women”, “Children”, “People with Disabilities”, “The LGBTQIA Community” and “Oral History”.
