Needy treated on World Hunger Day

Healthy Food and basic nutrition are basic human rigts and on Tuesday, 28 May, organisations in Bloemfontein pulled together to celebrate World Hunger Day.

The National Council of and for Persons with Disabilities (NCPD) took hands with the RSA Group to supply fresh fruit and vegetables to three facilities in Bloemfontein.

The local branch of Meals on Wheels made their kitchen facilities available for the preparation of healthy food for the special event.

The three local facilities that were treated were the Emelia Centre for children with severe disabilities, the Kopano Workshop for adults with disabilities and the Jean Webber Home for people with severe disabilities.

Zani Kunz, national director of the Mike Loutfie Foundation, said the RSA Group will continue to supply the three facilities with fresh fruit and vegetables from the Bloemfontein Fresh Produce Market on a weekly basis.

The RSA Group is a trader in fresh fruit and vegetables on behalf of its principals and the Mike Loutfie Foundation coordinates all the RSA Group’s socio-economic endeavours through sustainable programmes.

Through the combined efforts on 28 May, soup were served to 1 000 people in Bloemfontein.

Angelique Murphy, fund raising manager from Meals on Wheels in Bloemfontein, says they cook healthy meals on weekdays for around 80 000 people in Bloemfontein. They also have a special service where for a donation, a cooked meal can be delivered at someone’s door.

She says this is a good idea for someone that want to support a family in need or for a grandma or grandpa living on their own.

Therina Wentzel-Du Toit, national director of the NCDP, said the RSA Group will also assist the facilities in creating vegetable gardens for the sustainable availability of fresh produce, skills development and eventually to create a source of income.
