These centres still closed

Driving licensing centres and vehicle testing centres remain closed during lockdown level 4.

Hillary Mophethe, spokesperson for the Departement of Police, Roads and Transport in the Free State, says in a media release that these centres will remain closed even though dealerships are allowed to sell vehicles under level 4 regulations. These vehicles can only be registered once the centres are open to the public.

The centres will open on 1 June, provided they are ready to do so under strict occupational health and safety Covid-19 guidelines, as published by the Department of Labour. The centres are now only open for staff preparing for reopening.

In the meantime, the department is implementing measures to disinfect all its premises and equipment in order to comply with the criteria for reopening.

The criteria for operations to resume include comprehensive sanitisation of the centres, devising adequate social distancing mechanisms and procuring sufficient personal protective equipment for the staff.

Some facilities may only open after 1 June, in order to give them sufficient time to adhere to the Covid-19 health guidelines.

All leaner’s licences, driving licences and vehicle licence disks that expired 21 days before the lockdown, or during lockdown, are deemed to be valid until the end of the 30-day grace period. Since the centres are not open yet, the start of the grace period will be publicised at a later stage.

The department will announce when the facilities are open to deliver services that are permitted under level 4 regulations.
