Youth aims to quench thirst

His passion for innovation is leading Sphamandla Jaza to the South African Youth Water Prize competition.

Sphamandla is a Gr. 11 learner of the HTS Louis Botha.

He scooped first position in the Free State leg of the South African Youth Water Prize competition, held in Bloemfontein on Friday (04/05).

Sphamandla’s project is called “Quench your Thirst”, an innovation to help distil surface, ground and sea water. His method uses recycled material that can be afforded by people with a low income. The process will contribute positively to avail potable water, which is currently lacking due to pollution and natural phenomena.

The competition on provincial level is followed by the final round at national level.

Winners of the national competition get to compete internationally at the Stockholm Junior Water Prize competition in Sweden.

Full bursaries to study towards a career in the water sector at a university of the winner’s choice (all over the country), are also available.

The bursaries are in line with the Department of Water and Sanitation’s 2020 Vision for Water and Sanitation programme, aimed to teach learners the importance of the efficient use of water and the protection of water sources.

The programme attracts a number of Gr. 9 to Gr. 11 learners of schools across the country doing Mathematics and Science.

Learners are encouraged to identify problems related to water and sanitation in their community and schools, to conduct studies, and come up with innovative solutions to the problem.
