16-month-old girl stabbed to death

Provincial Commissioner, Lt Gen Yolisa Matakata has expressed shock over a father’s horrific killing of his toddler during an alleged domestic dispute with her mother on a farm in Buffelsjagsrivier near Swellendam.

According to a statement from the Office of the Provincial Police Commissioner released last week, a preliminary investigation revealed that at about 15:30 on Thursday a 33-year-old man, arrested for the 16-month-old’s killing, and his partner, the mother of the child, were on the farm Bloemhof fighting over work on a farm in the neighbouring town of Witsand, when the suspect grabbed the child and took her outside and allegedly stabbed her.

“The baby girl, identified as Alime Mbasha (16 months old), died at the scene from cut and stab wounds to her neck and chest,” the statement said. “The mother (24) sustained minor injuries during the ordeal.

“The suspect, who is the father of the deceased child, was arrested and taken to the Swellendam Police Station where he is currently being detained. He will face a charge of murder. He was scheduled to appear in the local magistrates’ court on Monday 13 January.”

Western Cape Police Commissioner Yolisa Matakata condemned the killing in the strongest terms, urging that justice prevail in ensuring the suspect remains behind bars.

On Monday, in her first media briefing since her appointment, she expressed concern over serious crime levels in the province, and particularly against women and children, adding that she was appalled to learn of this latest violent incident.
