A much loved teacher dies

The school community of Swartland High mourns the loss of a beloved English teacher who touched the hearts of many of her students and colleagues.

Linda Brebner, apparently in her early 70s, died on 12 May after a battle with cancer.

She devoted 15 years of her career to teaching English to learners from Grade 8 to 12 at the school before retiring at the age of 67.

A former colleague, Myrtle Kreuiter, said Brebner’s experience and subject knowledge was of immense value.

She said Brebner was always willing to play her part even when it came to odd jobs such as doing gate duty during sports events and organising the logistics in preparation for Interschools.

“Her youthful spirit and particular sense of humour resonated with teenagers and colleagues,” Kreuiter said.

Her learners will remember her patience, and love for dogs and nature. They could always manage to put the work aside a bit, especially on Fridays, and let her talk about her canine children. All conversation, of course, had to be conducted in proper English; she was relentless about that – no learner would dare address her in Afrikaans.

“She will be remembered with love and appreciation in the hearts of the many learners, friends and colleagues she has touched.”

Several former learners also responded to the news of her death on Facebook. The Rockie family has lost a gem. May you rest peacefully, Ma’am Brebner,” Justin Hagen wrote.

“‘It’s not can I go to the bathroom, it’s may I go,’” he recalled one of Brebner’s most famous sayings.

Cameron Roy Hart wrote: She was an absolute legend in her own way. An amazing English teacher. Always missed her since leaving high school, and the one teacher over the years who has always stuck in my thoughts and her lessons. Not to mention arriving at school on a hot day in a Subaru instead of her old 232, because it had an aircon.

The school staff and management expressed condolences to Brebner’s husband Patrick, two daughters and grandsons.
