Abalone haul uncovered

Provincial Traffic in Caledon made an abalone bust on the N2 on Friday.

Kenny Africa, provincial traffic chief, said one of his officers stopped a Nissan LDV.

“After a thorough investigation she discovered 20 bags of abalone,” he said. “The driver fled the scene.”

The traffic officer confiscated both the vehicle and the abalone, and handed them over to Caledon police.

Africa said she is in possession of the driver’s licence and currently opening a docket at Caledon police.

“The vehicle was fitted with false number plates and the VIN number indicates the vehicle was stolen,” he said.

Africa said he was also informed the suspect was apprehended and held at Caledon Police Station on various charges.

Rachelle Swart, provincial traffic inspector in Caledon, confirmed a man was arrested on the N2 just past the turn-off from the town to Cape Town. “He was in possession of abalone, a possible stolen vehicle, false licence disk and number plate not applicable to the vehicle,” she said. The man resisted arrest and appeared in the Caledon court on Monday.
