Chicken workers protest

The N2 at Sir Lowry’s Pass was closed on Friday morning for almost an hour due to protest action at Orchard in Grabouw.

Kenny Africa, provincial traffic chief, said the area was reopened at 12:00 as protesters were compelled by police to move and kept at a distance.

David Williams, Community Policing Forum chairman in Grabouw, said the Elgin Free Range Chickens (EFRC) labour strike turned violent on Wednesday, “but a good SAPS response made the group split,” he said.

Williams said Colonel Jansen and Brigadier Donovan Heilbron spoke to both the union and EFRC management.

“We advised them on how to find common ground for the interest of the workers on strike and those working,” he said. Williams said the dangers for others at work elsewhere who could be mistakenly targeted were explained. Some male EFRC workers had gone on a rampage, vandalising the properties of those at work. “We neutralised the crowd, who suspended their action temporarily around lunchtime,” he said. “What broke my heart is that no one in our community called the police when it happened or spoke out against it,” Williams said.

He said protesters returned to the gates of EFRC for the remainder of the week “in protest, but peaceful.”

There was no further action yesterday, and the CCMA head met with EFRC management and the trade union at 09:00.
