Cops’ anti-drugs programme

The Moorreesburg Police and Crime Prevention Youth Desk ran a few programmes about the negative effects of substance abuse earlier this month.

At talks given to children, at Broodkraal Estate on Tuesday 2 July and Koringberg on the 3rd, the damaging effects on the body that drugs have was illustrated.

Sgt Nicolette Visagie, Moorreesburg police spokesperson, also explained what happens when someone is involved in crime. The children demonstrated various crimes through role-play.

On Thursday 4 July, Moorreesburg police in conjunction with Moorreesburg Community Policing Forum (CPF) and the Crime Prevention Youth Desk ran a holiday programme with children from Moorreesburg, Bossiesvlei farm, Drieheuwel farm and Rustasie.

Addressing the same topics, Visagie focused on the deadly effects the sniffing of glue and other inhalants can have on anyone experimenting with them. The topic of children’s rights, and the responsibility of ensuring their rights are guaranteed, was also discussed.

Moorreesburg police urge parents and caretakers to be on the look out for children who start experimenting with glue. “It is a huge concern for us, for it is very dangerous for children to sniff glue. The short and long-term effects of sniffing glue and other inhalant products, such as paint, lighter fluid or anything in an aerosol can, can be determental to their health.”

Symptoms include feeling sick and nauseous, forgetful, an inability to see things clearly, loss of control of arms and/or legs, stumbling. These are known side effects that can last up to 45 minutes, as are short-term memory loss, damage to the brain, hearing loss, increased heart rate, damage to the liver and kidney and, in some instances, even death.

The police also plead with businesses not to sell glue to children.
