Council outlines year’s highlights

The last council meeting for 2018 of Theewaterskloof (TWK) Municipality was held on Thursday 29 November in council chambers.

Christelle Vosloo, Executive Mayor of TWK, shared highlights of projects and mentioned the Biggest Deal as one of the highlights of her year, as the programme promotes and encourages entrepreneurial skills among the youth of TWK.

Alex Kempthorne of Urban Econ, who was contracted by TWK to conduct a feasibility study for erf 136, a portion of land adjacent to the Caledon Nature Garden, presented the economic development agency’s feasibility study.

She said the study focused on three main objectives, “to identify economic tourism opportunities for the land, to investigate market feasibility and suggest an implementation plan...”

Development concept research suggests a restaurant and shop, tea garden, weekend market, braai and picnic facility with children’s play area, tourism office, conference and function facility, and an education centre as being likely potentials for development at the site.

Because much time has been spent on finding suitable land for rebuilding the Traffic Testing Station in Grabouw, which was burnt down by protestors in May 2016, it was recommended that the Ryke Street building be upgraded to accommodate the municipal court and fines office, and library. Approval should be given to investigate erven 953, next to the old age home in Ridge Street, being used to build traffic offices, vehicle registration, driver’s licence and learner’s licence venue.
