Couple on secret of 50 happy years

It was love at first sight for Caryl and Rowan Beattie when they met as teenagers. Today, after 50 years of marriage, they are more in love than ever.

“For me it was love at first sight,” said Rowan with a twinkle in his eye. “I don’t think it was for Caryl. I had to work hard, despite being in my teens.”

Today, after so many happy years together, they are proud to have celebrated their golden wedding earlier this year.

The Beatties are the owners of Esona Boutique Wine Estate, between Robertson and Bonnievale. They bought the wine estate in 2003 and manage it with love and passion.

Caryl and Rowan, originally from Cape Town, were members of the same church group when they first met.

They were married, first at the Wynberg Magistrates’ Court and afterwards in church, on 18 March 1969 – a special day, Rowan recalls. “I remember how lucky I thought I would be for the rest of my life,” he said. “Both our families supported our marriage.”

On the couple’s secret to a happy marriage, Rowan said: “We are both believers in Jesus Christ. We pray together every day when we are together – it is difficult to argue while praying. Marriage is a partnership where both are equal. I tend to be a pusher, whereas Caryl is a wonderful supporter, a role she enjoys.”

They have five married sons and 13 grandchildren (three boys and 10 girls). The family spends a lot of time together.

They agree that raising their sons and seeing them mature and marry, and being close to their grandchildren were their richest blessings.

They enjoy tranquillity and each other’s company. Rowan often sits before the fire enjoying his wife’s home-made meals, and Caryl loves spending time with their offspring.
