District youth education forum elected

Representative Councils of Learners (RCL) from high schools in the Overberg Education District and junior town councillors from TWK and Cape Agulhas municipalities met in Caledon.

On 1 September, they held a successful youth conference at Swartberg Secondary School.

Kaylee Krige, junior mayor of TWK, welcomed the delegates and wished them success in their deliberations of the day. The theme of the conference, “Living the legacy through our Values”, was highlighted through various interactive learning activities, in which the delegates participated enthusiastically. The main address, on “Living the values”, was delivered by Kobus Mike from the Overberg Education District office.

The election of an Overberg Education Youth Forum was also an important part of the conference activities. This was conducted by Randall Theunissen of the local Independent Electoral Commission office in Caledon, supported by Lindelwa Nonqane and Chris Balie of the district and provincial IEC outreach office, respectively.

The district youth forum members will join other forums of the Western Cape in the fourth school term in engaging with the Education MEC’s office and WCED head of Education on education challenges affecting learners directly. It also affords the youth an opportunity to give input into how to address these challenges.

An additional member of the Overberg Education Youth Forum is Charl Bester of Overberg HS, the secretary is Anaxolo Khonkwana of Groenberg Secondary and the chairperson Alicia Kies of Emil Weder Secondary.

Other additional members are Shavonia Peters of Albert Myburgh Secondary and Diego Petersen of Swartberg Secondary. With the newly elected district youth forum are the Overberg Education District officials – Deputy Chief Education Specialist Yolanda Bailey and School Enrichment and RCL Coordinator Kobus Mike.

Mike closed the conference, thanking “all the learners and educators for attending the conference and Swartberg Secondary for the use of the school hall and assisting with the logistical arrangements for the conference.

“We thank the IEC for conducting the youth forum elections and affording the learners a real live experience of an election.”

Mike also expressed participants’ gratitude particularly to Kaylee Krige for representing the TWK municipality and its support for the initiative.

“Lastly, but most importantly,” he concluded, “our sincere appreciation and best wishes to the chairperson, Alicia Kies, and the members of our newly elected Overberg Education Youth Forum for your willingness to avail yourselves to serve the youth of our district through this platform.”
