Don’t discard old docs, call museum

The Robertson Museum received a most welcome call a few weeks ago about the loft of an old building that was full of old documents and had to be cleared out.

It had been a lawyer’s office since late 1800, with names like Messrs Osler, Theubes Snr and Jnr, Warren and Nel – to mention a few – occupying the premises.

“It is so important to the museum that people who buy old buildings in Robertson and surrounding areas, or farmers moving to town, do not to throw old papers and photos away,” a museum spokesperson says. “Please remember they contain the history of our district, and throwing them away means they will be lost forever.”

The information is vital for research being done at the museum into old families, what with many family-related requests that come from all over the world.

“Your grandchildren or great-grandchildren will one day start asking questions, and if you are not careful to conserve old documents none of them will be available to them. Please write names and the year on the back of photos. Sit down with your parents or grandparents and ask about the things you need to know about the past.”

The museum welcomes old papers and photos from lofts and boxes from beneath beds, and the museum can decide whether they are worth keeping or not.

Visit the museum in the annex behind the ruin to be more involved.
