Latest Covid-19 statistics

Statistics show that Grabouw, within the Theewaterskloof Municipality, and Zwelihle, within Overstrand, still have the highest number of active Covid-19 cases in the Overberg.

Numbers released by the Overberg District Municipality show that on Friday 26 June Zwelihle had 123 active cases, 109 recoveries and 190 confirmed cases. Grabouw had 113 active cases, 53 recoveries and 232 confirmed cases.

Grabouw also recorded eight Covid-19 related deaths.

Villiersdorp recorded three deaths, Gansbaai recorded two deaths, and Arniston, Bot River, Buffeljagsbaai, Napier, Mount Pleasant and Onrus each recorded one.

On Friday the 26th the Overstrand recorded 538 confirmed cases. The Overberg, in total, had 992 confirmed cases, 537 active cases and 434 recoveries.

According to Roche Butler, spokesperson for the Overberg Health Department, there are currently 18 patients admitted to Covid-19 wards at the district hospitals across the Overberg. Six of these are patients under investigation.

“Since there are only district hospitals in the Overberg, patients who need intensive care are transferred to Worcester Regional Hospital. Two patients were recently transferred to intensive care units.”

Butler adds one is at a higher risk of contracting severe Covid-19 if older than 55 years with an existing health condition, such as diabetes, hypertension, TB, HIV, lung disease or if one’s immune system is compromised.

“If you fall in this risk category we urge you to stay at home if you can and to take extra care,” she says. “This includes washing or sanitising your hands frequently, keeping surfaces clean, always wearing your mask when leaving home and keeping a safe distance from other people.”

The Department of Health emphasises people should remember they are all at risk of contracting Covid-19. It encourages everyone to stay safe and protect their loved ones by following the set guidelines. These include the washing of hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, not touching their face, staying at home, and if they have to go out always wear a cloth mask. Lastly, they must cover their cough and sneeze with your elbow or tissue, stay at home if they are sick and maintain social distancing.

The Department of Health also encourages people to keep their work surfaces and frequently touched surfaces clean by disinfecting them with diluted bleach. Some people are more at risk of contracting severe Covid-19, such as the elderly and those with underlying medical conditions. This is why it is so important people take all the precautions so they can protect themselves and their loved ones from Covid-19.

Butler explains that to be tested for Covid-19 they will first need to be screened. “If they have flu-like symptoms they can be screened for Covid-19 by using the self-screening tool on the Western Cape Government coronavirus website, www.westerncape.gov.za/coronavirus, calling the toll-free provincial hotline on 021 928 4102, or calling the doctor or clinic and ask that they screen telephonically.

If referred for testing people must call their nearest facility to arrange a suitable time for testing.
