Local player is First Choice face

Local boy Keagan Johannes has been appointed one of South Africa’s leading milk and dairy product brands First Choice’s new brand ambassador for its High Protein Recovery drink.

Born and raised in Malmesbury in the Swartland, Johannes, who turns 21 on 27 November, attended primary school at Laerskool Swartland, started high school at Hoërskool Swartland and completed Grade 11 and 12 at Garsfontein High School in Pretoria, where he was a boarder.

Since then, he has made waves as a promising young rugby player.

Johannes reckons his passion for rugby started at a very young age. “I used to go to the rugby field with my father in his playing days, and I guess that’s where my love of the game began. I started playing while at primary school, and took part in my first provincial game for the Boland u-13 team at Craven Week.”

He continued to represent the Boland u-18 team at the Academy Week in 2016. After his move to Pretoria he was selected for the Blue Bulls u-18 Craven Week team.

“After completing high school I was selected to play for the University of Pretoria (Tuks) team in the Varsity Cup u-20 Young Guns competition. I was also part of the successful Blue Bulls u-21 team that won the SA Rugby u-21 Championship. Before the rugby season ended due to the Covid-19 pandemic I played in the Blue Bulls Supersport Challenge warm up matches.”

Johannes is a huge fan of First Choice’s High Protein Recovery drink. “I love the product as it’s specially formulated to give elite and amateur athletes rapid muscle recovery after intense workouts or games,” he said. “It gives me the much-needed daily intake of protein and all the other beneficial minerals such as potassium, sodium and magnesium, which replace electrolytes lost through sweating.

“It’s delicious, and I love the new flavours – Peanut Butter and Banana Crème. Also, it’s so convenient as it’s ready to drink, and I do not need to watch my portion sizes as every pack is 250 ml. It definitely helps me recover after a strenuous practice session.”

He hopes to build a positive relationship with the brand and market the product to attract other athletes as well as the general public. “I would like to make a constructive contribution to the brand and be an example to other athletes. I want to inspire youngsters to push themselves as I truly believe everything is possible. I hope this platform gives me the opportunity to do just that.”

Johannes sees winning the SA u-21 Rugby Championship with the Blue Bulls as his greatest achievement to date.

“Hopefully we can win the SuperSport Challenge Cup and SA u-21 Championship for the second time in a row. My dream is to make it into the Blue Bulls.”

In his free time, Johannes likes to play games on PlayStation and spend quality time with family and friends.

“It’s tough being a rugby player, as we have very strict training programmes. I try to spend as much time as possible with my family doing something that is not rugby related.”

He concludes with a smile: “I’m truly grateful for this wonderful opportunity to be associated with a leading brand such as First Choice High Protein Recovery. I’m also convinced our relationship will give me the edge to succeed. As they say, First Choice is the Good Choice!”
