Local stokvel treats children

The Ladies Aid, a stokvel group from Zolani in Ashton, reached out to about seven children in their community over the festive season by making their Christmas a little more special.

“Each of the 13 members of the stokvel bought a pair of clothes and other essentials for children in need, which we handed over on 21 December,” said Ntshokoleng Kumeke.

She said instead of just saving money for December the group decided it wanted to do something worthwhile for the community.

“We are from this community and want to give back to it,” Kumeke said.

“It is not our children who benefited from our project, but kids in need.

“We consulted with some community and social workers who work with children in our area to find out where the most need is. We hope to make it an annual event where we can help more kids in different ways. We want it to become bigger.

“The children were very happy when we surprised them, and we could see they appreciated it a lot. We are glad we could make a difference to the lives of these little ones, even if it was in a small way.”
