Michelangelo 2019 Awards

Several local wines and spirits excelled at the 2019 Michelangelo Wine & Spirits Awards, with Breedekloof’s Le Belle Rebelle (Ou Stokery) standing out with a trophy and three double gold awards.

Van Loveren (Christina Méthode Cap Classique Brut NV), Rooiberg (Rooiberg Winery Cape Blend 2015) and Arabella (Arabella Sauvignon Blanc 2019) from the Robertson Wine Valley and Le Belle Rebelle (Mariette Chenin Blanc 2018) from the Breedekloof Wine Valley received trophies.

These wine and spirits were awarded the trophies by 28 international judges because they had the highest score of all entries in their respective classes.

The local wine winning platinum was Robertson’s De Wetshof Estate The Site Chardonnay 2016. To have earned a prestigious platinum medal this wine was awarded 96 points out of a possible 100. It falls in the top 1% of all 2019 entries.

Double gold went to the Robertson Wine Valley’s Bon Courage Gooseberry Bush Sauvignon Blanc 2019, Rietvallei Wine Estate’s Estéanna Sauvignon Blanc 2018, Excelsior Estate’s Evanthius Cabernet Sauvignon 2015 and Sauvignon Blanc 2019, Van Loveren Family Vineyards’ African Java Pinotage 2019 and Sauvignon Blanc 2019, Viljoensdrift Associated Wineries’ River Grandeur Cabernet Sauvignon 2015 and Zandvliet’s Zandvliet Hill of Enon Small Berry Pick 2017.

To earn a Michelangelo double gold medal, the wines received 93 points out of a possible 100, which puts it in the top 10% of the winners.

From the Worcester Wine Route double gold went to De Wet Wine Cellar’s Cabernet Sauvignon 2018 and Overhex Wines International’s Survivor Pinotage 2018.

From the Breedekloof Wine Valley, double gold went to Du Toitskloof Wines’ Cape Ruby 2013, Le Belle Rebelle’s Mariette Chardonnay MCC 2014, Merwida Vineyards’ Cabernet Sauvignon 2017, Mountain Ridge Wines’ Merlot 2017, Le Belle Rebelle’s Old N1 African Dry Gin and Old N1 Fijnbos Fields, Bergsig Estate’s Oom Prop Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve 2015, Silkbush Mountain Vineyards’ Pinotage 2017 and Sauvignon blanc 2019.
