New library opens

The community of Groendal in Franschhoek has a brand new library, which caters for toddlers, kids and the visually impaired.

Executive Mayor Gesie van Deventer launched the new library with much excitement on Friday 7 September.

The launch coincided with National Arbor Week as well as National Book Week in this month with its heritage focus.

“Libraries were once our only source of entertainment,” said Van Deventer about the value of libraries during her childhood. “It was an absolute gem.

“It is really a facility for the whole community. I am very proud of this facility and I want to encourage the community to make use of it to the fullest extent.”

Van Deventer also appealed to the community to take care of the new library.

It replaces the previous container library that served the community since 2007.

The library is fully equipped, and has, among other things, an Early Childhood Developement Centre as well as a mini library for the visually impaired.

The library also has a fully equipped computer room with space for learners to study and do research as well as a hall facility, which the community can use for meetings and special events.

The library will be open to the public by the end of September.
