OCT give donations to applicants

A lively and interactive meeting took place at the Caledon Casino Hotel, Spa and Entertainment on Saturday.

At the 17th annual general meeting of the Overberg Community Trust (OCT), its chairperson Eunice Theunissen welcomed the sense of accountability evoked by questions that were directed at the trust’s board members.

Concern, for instance, was expressed about the number of bursary applications received and a much smaller number being awarded.

During her chairperson’s review, Theunissen explained that a total of 106 applications for OCT bursaries were received, of which 33 were awarded.

“Most of the students also received bursaries from NSFAS [the National Student Financial Aid Scheme],” she said, “which meant a bursary from the trust had to be declined, resulting in the trust spending less than the budgeted amount on bursaries.”

Theunissen said the trust received 41 applications for donations from schools, entrepreneurs, community and welfare organisations, soup kitchens and skills development programmes. She said of these applications, 19 would be awarded after the AGM.

Secretary Hendrika Johannes stated that applications without required documentation and information are incomplete, and remain a headache for the OCT.

The trust would love to see schools marketing the bursaries more and will actively foster an even closer awareness of what is expected from applicants.
