Overberg base best in the land

Air Force Base Overberg (AFB) has retained its title as the best base of the South African Air Force.

Colonel Cassie de Castro, Officer Commanding Air Force Base Overberg, received this sought-after award from Lieutenant General FZ Msimang, Chief of the South African Air Force, at a gala event in Pretoria on 30 January.

“This is the sixth time in the last seven years AFB Overberg triumphed over bigger and more prominent bases such as AFB Ysterplaat, AFB Waterkloof and AFB Makhado,” a proud De Castro said. The best base of the South African Air Force (SAAF) is determined by the Inspectorate General division of the South African Air Force. “This directorate’s purpose is not only to provide the Chief of the SA Air Force with an impartial, independent and competent monitoring and audit service, but also to guide commanding officers and individuals to achieving the highest levels of effectiveness, efficiency, sound governance, discipline and integrity,” De Castro explained.

Aspects such as compliance with legislation, policies and regulations such as the Defence Act, Public Finance Management Act (PFMA), Public Service Act, Treasury regulations and generally accepted practices, leadership, strategy, resources, processes, aviation safety, discipline, and occupational health and safety are all assessed. Scores attained in these assessments decide the best base.

De Castro congratulated all the members of AFB Overberg on his return and said the trophy and the honour belonged to each member of the base, since they ensured AFB Overberg runs its operations smoothly. “This southernmost base in the SA Air Force is a very special base with a very specific and important task, with very special people working there,” De Castro said. “Members of Air Force Base Overberg believe in executing their duties right the first time.”

The year has begun on a high note for Air Force Base Overberg, and the base looks forward to celebrating the SA Air Force’s collective history – 25 years in a democratic South Africa and 100 years since the founding of the SA Air Force.

“Surely the future can only be better and brighter for this unique base, where all aircraft, weapons systems and equipment used by the SAAF are tested before being released to operational service at other SAAF bases,” colonel de Castro said in closing.
