Residents irked after being told to move

A group of about 40 residents from the informal settlement Enkanana in Robertson claim they are being evicted from their homes (shacks) after they made an agreement with the Langeberg Municipality in 2015.

According to them about 87 of them were given plots in December 2015 along with 5 toilets and 5 taps and told they could live there henceforth, after they occupied the land illegally.

They claim that they are now told to move in the next few days and do not have a clue to where they have to move to while the rest of the residents will remain in Enkanana.

“We heard that new developments are going to take place where we now live and that we have to move, but nobody tells us where to. We are not fighting the system, it’s just that we are not well informed, We were told by the municipality that ASLA will tell us what is happening and ASLA tells us the Municipality will tell us,” Thamsanqa Ntayi, one of the residents, says.

“They don’t communicate with us, but they expect us to move. It is not as easy as it sounds. Many of us are unemployed and some are single mothers. We are not tortoises that carry our homes on our backs, it takes time and it is expensive to move,” he adds.

“Why should only we move but the others can stay?”

A spokesperson for the Langeberg Municipality, Willy-John Gordon, said in a reply to an enquiry with numerous questions around the issue: “You should ask your source for the correct information as provided in the meeting with the Kanana residents on 30 July 2018.”
