Support for the peaceful protest

The restaurant industry has been particularly hard hit during the continued state of lockdown.

Level 3 has allowed restaurants to have sit-down dinners again, but the strict rules and regulations imposed on restaurant owners have made it almost impossible to earn a viable living. Many restaurants have been forced to retrench staff or even close their doors permanently.

On Wednesday 22 July the restaurant industry organised a national peaceful protest called “1 Million Seats on the Streets”, in which restaurants placed tables and chairs outside their restaurants or in public areas, in some instances even along the national highways from 12.00 to 14.00.

Local Caledon restaurants took part in this peaceful demonstration, placing chairs outside their establishments, inviting patrons to take a seat. Some restaurants closed for the duration of the protest in solidarity with the protesters.

Restaurants cannot survive without the support of patrons. Even just buying a take-away meal or coffee can help them survive these very difficult times.

In Napier, law-enforcement officers instructed restaurateurs to remove the tables and chairs from the road, so owners decided to display posters and black boards in front of their restaurants.

In Struisbaai and Cape Agulhas restaurant owners set up tables and chairs on their business properties.
