Trafficking on the rise

– Continues from page 1.

This is one of the warning signs we tell people to look out for,” Hanekom says, “someone promised you an opportunity and said they would organise all the visas and passports themselves.” A21 has had reports of children being transported in taxis over the border and just told to hide, some transported on buses with an adult posing as their parent.

There are also cases of young boys being trafficked from Lesotho to work in mines or factories. “Most often they are lured with the promise of a better life and making money, but on a few occasions they have been lured with the promise of soccer contracts,” Hanekom says.

The human trafficking hotline A21 assists every human trafficking-related call. “By calling 0800 222 777 you can give an anonymous tip off, receive advice or assistance in a case, ask for help and find out about organisations in your province that can assist you or provide training,” Hanekom says

She says human trafficking is an organised crime, which cannot be fought without partnerships and cooperation. A21’s Resource Line works in partnership with local law enforcement, government and civil society groups across the country to ensure every case is handled professionally.

Call 0800 222 777, or if you see a suspicious-looking vehicle contact the Bot River police on 028 284 9351 or Caledon police on 028 2143900/3929/3928.

“No tip off is too small or irrelevant,” says Hanekom. “The best way to uncover trafficking is to report, so if you see something, say something.”
