Youth Day at the air force base

Official Air Force Base (AFB) Overberg Youth Day celebrations kicked off at the Heuningberg Nature Reserve in Bredasdorp.

On Friday 15 June, after Flight Sergeant A Gertse of the Environmental Section at AFB Overberg presented information regarding the importance of combating plastic waste, and members put their new knowledge into action by picking up litter in the Nature Reserve. This action was aimed not only at conserving nature and the environment for this generation, but future ones too.

Despite intermittent rain and cold wind, the young people persisted in their clean-up until 11 o’clock, when welcome sustenance in the form of boerewors rolls and cold drink was served.

The youth of AFB Overberg supported the SAAF Youth Day theme of “Celebrating the young Mandela… Action against poverty”, but also wanted to do something to combat hunger in their region. The committee launched a very successful food drive at AFB. During the two weeks leading up to Youth Day four crates of tinned food, boxes of dry provisions, toiletries and even blankets were donated by members of the base.

These donations were handed to the staff of the ACVV office in Bredasdorp by the youth of Air Force Base Overberg. The organisation expressed gratitude for the donation, which had come at a time when its own stocks available to assist people in need were very low.

It is heartening to know that the donation from Air Force Base Overberg would be distributed to destitute and disadvantaged people in the Overberg region.

A committee, consisting of members of both genders, various ethnicities and different rank groups, including civilians, was chosen from members in the age group from 18 to 35 years to arrange the Youth Day activities.

The South African government is celebrating what would have been the 100th birthday of Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela, the first democratically elected president of South Africa.

In honour of his legacy the government has committed itself to achieving Millennium Development Goal One — the eradication of poverty and hunger.
