Five km run see hundreds participate in Zwelethemba

An impressive 302 participants in the 5 km run and 34 participants in the walk event rose to the challenge on Saturday 22 October, starting and finishing at Vusisizwe Secondary School.

The route was in and around Zwelethemba, Worcester with the average time around 25 minutes, with the fastest male competitor Douglas de Bruyn completing the course in the 5 km within 16:52.

The first overall lady runner was the 11-year-old Avela Shumi from a local Primary School in Zwelethemba.

The weather was great with lots of fun games and entertainment for the whole family. Everyone was out around the route and spectators were cheering as participants crossed the finish line. Prize money was given to three categories for the first three finishers in the 5 km run and first three overall winners in the walk event.

The overall winner’s male and female winners also left with brand new running shoes.

The race organizers thanked the school community of Zwelethemba and all the generous sponsors for helping to make this event possible.

Keep your eyes on the calendar for next year for the second 5 km Fun Run & 1 mile walk.
