KICK TB Soccer Tournament application process underway

You may have heard about its launch or seen it on national TV a couple of weeks ago.

The application process for the KICK TB Soccer Tournament officially opened on Monday 24 April. It will be open until the end of May.

The tournament is hosted by the Inkwenkwezi Community Projects (ICP) and South African Football Association (Safa) Cape Winelands. Some partners include the education department, SAPS, Government Communications and Information System (GCIS), Cape Winelands District Municipality, Breede Valley Municipality (BVM), the health department and the South African Tuberculosis Vaccine Initiative.

Following its massive media campaign and positive community response in 2015 and in recent weeks, the tournament will target schools all over the region to create awareness around TB. More than 20 primary schools are expected to compete for the spoils, with the finals held in September.

Phumza Zotwana, Safa regional manager, believes this year’s tournament will produce more emerging soccer stars, honing their skills at local junior clubs or beyond. “Last year, we brought teams from Ajax Cape Town to play against our local clubs,” she said.

“We need our juniors to be exposed to the professional side of football and to be seen by the more professional clubs, in the hopes that they will join the likes of Ajax CT or Cape Town City. They could also possibly play for the Safa regional team.”

Organisers are hard at work towards getting local businesses to sponsor the tournament, so that it can expand to reach other communities in the province as well,” Zotwana concluded.
