Maties’ eight-try victory

FNB Maties thrashed FNB Shimlas 58-12 in the sixth round of the FNB Varsity Cup in Bloemfontein on Monday night.

“It is still relatively early in the competition, but the possibility of a home semi-final is in the offing,” Hawies Fourie, Maties coach said after his team’s excellent performance in Bloemfontein.

“We were clinical in most facets of the game and scored a few tries from turn-overs, something we concentrated on in our training.

“Apart from a short lapse in the second part of the first half, we were in control of the game and used the opportunities we got to our best advantage.

“To reach the semi-finals we still need 5 log points in two games - against CUT [Central University of Technology, Bloemfontein] and UJ [University of Johannesburg], and due to the Tukkies’ [University of Pretoria] slaughter of the Ixias by 100-0, we are a bit behind on points difference.

“We still lead the log, though, and are confident the away game against CUT in two weeks’ time and the home match against UJ the following week will put us in a strong position to earn a home semi-final. If we win that, the final will be contested in Stellenbosch.

“Of these two teams UJ are doing well at the moment. They have an excellent kicking flyhalf and strong loose forwards and are in an upward curve, especially after their victory over Tuks. We just need to stay focussed on each game.”

Shimlas started Monday’s game on the wrong foot when scrumhalf Armand Pretorius was yellow-carded for not retreating 10 metres right near their try line. Maties sprang in here and launched a backline move, where winger Edwill van der Merwe scored the first of three tries, flyhalf Chris Smith converting, the visitors leading 7-0, just eight minutes in.

Maties kept the momentum and scored at regular intervals, with Smith scoring in the corner, flanker Stephan Streicher going over for a seven-pointer and bringing the score to 23-0 after 18 minutes.

The second half was an all-Maties affair, with the visitors scoring three times, twice by Van der Merwe (wing). Maties ended the game off in style in the last minute scoring their eighth try through fullback Craig Barry, converted by Reinhardt Fortuin and sealing the game 58-12.
