Tourney pays tribute to local activist

The annual Joseph Mayaka Soccer tournament took place on 16 June this year, as part of the youth month festivities.

The tournament was hosted by members of the Mkolo Creative with the aim to keep young people busy and away from substance abuse and crime, by making them role models for other young people.

They saw a need and lack of soccer tournaments in the area and decided to host the tournament and at the same time give honour to a local anti-apartheid activist, Joseph Mayaka, who went out of his way to develop young people.

The tournament was supported by the Worcester Round Table Association and Protea Cumberland Hotel, where Mayaka was employed untill his death.

They sponsored the event with trophies and medals.

Eight teams took part in the tournament including two local schools, PJB Cona Primary and Siyafuneka Primary.

The winners of the tournament was Boland Ajax with PJB Cona in second place and All Stars in third place.

“Young people need to be kept busy. It is our responsibility as caring citizens to ensure that young people are kept busy with constructive programmes so they can be disciplined and respectful,” said Macebo Kolo one of the organizers.

“We are now planning a competition for senior citizens. Material support, for the prizes, is however our main stumbling block.”

“We challenge all businesses and the private sector to join hands in this initiative, so that we can put Worcester on the map,” said Kolo.
