A legacy of poems

After her husband passed away, Rose Lewis decided to publish her husband’s many poems.

George Lewis was a Methodist pastor for 40 years and wrote poetry for the greater part of his life.

“It started when he was stationed at a church in Zululand and the secretary needed something to add to the weekly bulletin. So he started writing something each week and I kept all of them.”

After his tenure there, the couple moved to England where they stayed for three years.

“Over there he just wrote more and more. I collected all of his poems, I just thought to myself that I can’t lose them. Of course, he never wanted any of his stuff published.”

After his passing in 2018 she emailed every publishing house in South Africa, but all of them turned her away.

“Then a woman from the Caribbean replied to one of my emails and neither one of us could figure out how it had reached her in the first place.

“But she immediately said she was eager to publish the poems my husband had written.”

Something Beautiful, the poetic meditations by a preacher, will officially be launched on Saturday 5 October. The event will be held at the Methodist Church at 36 Church Street, Strand from 11:30 to 14:00.

A variety of eats, puddings and refreshments will be sold in a bid to raise extra funds for the church.

The books cost R150 and is also available on Amazon. For more information phone Rose Lewis on 021 856 5602 or the church office on 021 854 5950.
