An eventful year in the Helderberg

It was a year of highs and lows for Helderberg residents. DistrictMail looks back on the news that made headlines in 2018.

January

V Local beachgoers were treated to a view of a whale with a difference when a mammoth humpback whale washed ashore at Strand Beach on Friday 12 January. The City of Cape Town’s Coastal Management team reported that the large male humpback whale carcass of 15 m in length washed ashore west of the Lourens River near Paardevlei. The whale’s carcass showed no signs of injury. The six-hour-long removal entailed lifting the carcass onto a flat-bed truck using heavy machinery and disposing of it at Vissershok Landfill site.

V Die provinsiale departement van vervoer en openbare werke het aangekondig dat werk aan die beloofde spoedbrekerryvlak (arrestor bed) by die gevaarlike aansluiting aan die voet van Sir Lowryspas en Gordonsbaaiweg op die N2 aan die einde van Januarie sou begin en teen Julie voltooi sal wees. Die spoedbrekryvlak is vanaf Augustus in werking.

V Helen Zille, premier van die Wes-Kaap, het aangekondig vanweë verskeie faktore kon Dag Zero op 21 April 2018 aanbreek, ná sy met die nasionale en provinsiale rampbestuurspanne vergader het om gebeurlikheidsplanne te bespreek. Met damvlakke wat weens goeie reën merkwaardig herstel het, is vlak 3-waterbeperkings vanaf 1 Desem-ber deur die Stad in werking ingestel.

February

V Helderberger Stefan Buchholz took on the gruelling challenge of swimming just over 8,04 km (5 miles) at the fourth annual Sanlam Cape Mile in support of the Heartlands Baby Sanctuary.

V The water crisis brought planning efforts for the annual Kramat Festival to an abrupt halt, with the Nurul Latief Islamic Association suspending all activities to September. Traditionally it was held over the Christian Easter weekend. The drought also led to the cancellation of cricket and baseball fixtures as well as a postponement of rugby fixtures to June.

V Hoërskool Macassar, ’n “hoeksteen in die gemeen­skap”, vier sy 40ste bestaansjaar.

March

V The provincial health depart­ment announced plans to build a new state-of-the-art regional hospital in the Paarde­vlei precinct. The first phase of the construction was scheduled to start at the end of the year, but no development has commenced to date.

V Somerset West Night Shelter celebrated 30 years of providing a safe refuge for homeless people in the Helderberg.

V Jeremy Glover, a Gordon’s Bay resident and Helderberg Sunrise Rotary Club president-elect, died in hospital from a head injury sustained in an accident during the Cape Town Cycle Tour. The 71-year-old was hit by a cyclist while on duty as a marshal at the race.

V The sudden disappearance of a Madagascan tenrec at Monkey Town in Somerset West caused a social media frenzy. It’s believed the alleged theft of Periwinkle occurred when a visitor apparently took the hedgehog from its open enclosure. In June, Nashua Winelands generously donated a CCTV camera system to the primate centre. Periwinkle has still not been found.

April

V ’n Skietgeveg het tussen sekerheids­beamptes en polisielede en ’n groep gewapende rowers ontstaan nadat die rowers by Spar Cinnamon Square in Strand toegeslaan het. Die rowers is op heter daad betrap deur sekerheids­beamp­tes van Gordonsbaai Sekuriteit en polisielede in die omgewing. ’n Polisie­beampte en een van die verdagtes is glo in die skietery gewond. ’n Gewapende reaksiebeampte in wie se voertuig sowat 27 koeël­gate gevind is, het ’n skiet­dood vrygespring. Een van die verdagtes is glo ná ’n wilde jaagtog en geskietery in ’n Ford Fiesta in Webbstraat aangekeer en in hegtenis geneem. Hy was in besit van ’n 9 mm-pistool en leë magasyn.

V Council announced a total of R90 million has been budgeted for the Paardevlei Transit Orientated Development Project for the 2018-’19 financial year. The first phase of the project will see the construction of an interchange at the N2/R102 intersection.

V The construction of the first showhouse for the Morkel’s Cottage housing development commenced. The first homeowners moved into their homes in October. The project is still ongoing.

V There was good news for dog walkers at Radloff Park as the City decided against its proposal to implement a small fenced area where dogs can roam freely. An alternative solution of a time-based system was deemed more favourable.

V A 12-hour-old baby girl was given a chance at life and placed in the Helderberg Baby Saver. She was the third infant placed in the safe since its establishment in 2014. Only days later the body of another baby was found in a wastebin in Somerset West, metres from the Baby Saver. In October, a five-day-old baby was also placed in the safe. In November, a baby’s body was found dumped on the rocks along Beach Road, Strand.

May

V A group of disgruntled protesters torched the municipal housing office in Macassar in protest against council’s apparent failure to meet basic service delivery needs. The building was again set alight during a protest in October and has since been closed.

V Roads agency Sanral commenced with two major maintenance projects on the N2, the first of which is an asphalt overlay on the highway east of the Baden Powell Drive interchange (R310) and the R102 intersection before Somerset West.

June

V Child killer and rapist Xolani Lantu (36) was handed three life sentences for the murder and rape of Minentle Lekhatha (5) in Nomzamo. The judge added another five years for the little girl’s kidnapping in June 2017.
