Asking for gifts illegal

Council’s solid waste personnel are forbidden from asking residents for Christmas boxes or other donations.

According to a City of Cape Town statement, its policy prohibits the soliciting of donations, but despite this, it has received reports of residents being asked, sometimes aggressively, for Christmas boxes or donations. “There have also been reports of threats directed towards residents that their refuse will not be collected if the demand for a box is not met,” the statement reads.

Council says it will not tolerate such behaviour from staff, who have been informed that soliciting is prohibited.

Says Xanthea Limberg, Mayoral Committee member for, among others, Water and Waste Services: “If residents believe that excellent service has been provided, they are at liberty to give a voluntary donation to staff as a gesture of thanks and goodwill, but under no circumstances should they be approached or solicited for money. City staff are appropriately remunerated.”

Incidents of intimidation by City staff can be reported on 0860 103 089 from 08:00 to 16:30 daily. The date, time and place of the incident, as well as a vehicle registration number must be provided.

Alternatively, you can report incidents via email to Wastewise.User@capetown.gov.za. Such reports will be investigated immediately and, where residents are willing to testify, the City will be able to take appropriate disciplinary action.

Residents are also warned of opportunists posing as collections staff at this time of year. If you suspect those approaching you to be misrepresenting themselves, the matter must be reported to the local police.
