Basin’s schools halt tours

Following the Covid-19 outbreak and it being declared a state of national disaster by the president, measures have been put in place to combat the spread of the virus.

Schools in the basin have heeded the call by the president to abandon international and local travel plans as well as mass gatherings.

Somerset College has postponed its annual matric ball, which was set to take place in April. The school has taken the virtual route and is geared for classes to go ahead via the online learning platform for the next two weeks until the holiday break on Friday 27 March. In addition, all events and sport have been cancelled until the end of June.

A rugby and netball tournament, which was meant to take place yesterday (18 March) at Somerset West Primary School, was cancelled. The school’s rugby and netball tour to Riebeek Kasteel, set to take place from 22 to 25 March, has been postponed and a new date is yet to be confirmed. The school further also cancelled a planned hockey tour to Langebaan, which was set to take place from 1 to 3 April.

According to David Schenck, principal at Parel Vallei High School, all tours, internal and abroad, have been cancelled. The school’s UK sports tour from 17 to 31 March has also been cancelled. “Any rescheduling of internal tours is host dependent and the school will have to wait to receive confirmation from the organisers. Refunding parents and schools for tour payments will be handled by the Finance Committee on a tour by tour basis.”
