Beehive attacked by gang of five robbers
06 September 2018

“It happened quite fast.”

This is the recollection of one of the workers at the Beehive convenience store in Main Road, Somerset West, where an armed robbery took place last Thursday morning (30 August).

“The five men came in like normal customers and then suddenly, all of them had guns,” said one of the workers in the store.

He said the owner of the shop was also there at the time of the incident, and went to the front to investigate the commotion. The incident occurred shortly after 08:00.

“One of them then pulled out a gun and held it to her back,” the worker related. “He then forced us all into the office and demanded that the tills and safe be opened. They also shoved the customers, who were in the store at the time, into the office with us.”

While one of the suspects was forcing the shop owner into the office, she pressed the panic button to alert the business’ security company.

“One security officer showed up, but he was quickly relieved of his weapon. However, he managed to radio for back up,” the employee said. “He too was shoved into the office with us.”

Armed response officers soon arrived and two of the robbers were arrested, while the other three managed to flee the scene on foot.

No-one was hurt and no shots were fired during the incident.

The employee said he was nervous to return to work the following day, but soon got used to being in the shop again. He added that in the 10 years he has worked at the store, this is the third time the establishment has been targeted by robbers.

According to Somerset West police spokesperson Sergeant Suzan Jantjies, the two men arrested, aged 32 and 41, are both from Khayelitsha.

“The three remaining suspects fled the scene with airtime, cigarettes, a cellphone and the security officer’s firearm,” she said.

“One of the suspects’ firearm was confiscated by the police.”
