City warns residents to be aware of banking fraud

Fraudulent emails requesting Cape Town residents to change their banking details for account payments to council have been circulated.

In a statement released late last month, the City of Cape Town warned residents to be aware of this apparent scam, which asks residents to change their City-recipient banking information.

To check whether an email received from the City is valid, residents are urged to confirm that it was sent from one of the City’s verified email addresses. If it is not from one of the email accounts below, it may be fraudulent.

The City’s registered email accounts are as follows: . For account payments and billing, the email will be sent from no-reply@capetown.gov.za or ebill@capetown.gov.za. . For City news and updates, the mail will be sent from ebilling.mail@info.capetown.gov.za or citynews.online@info.capetown.gov.za.

“If residents have received communication requesting them to change the City’s banking information and are unsure whether it is fraudulent or not, they are urged to verify the information with the City’s Call Centre on 0860 103 089,” said Ian Neilson, Mayoral Committee member for Finance.

“The City would not email residents from an unknown email address, asking that banking details be changed.

“We ask our residents to be vigilant and ignore such emails.”

Residents are also urged to report any suspicious behaviour to the City’s law enforcement agencies or at the local police station.

Should residents wish to pay via online banking, they are advised to add the City as a beneficiary on their bank’s website. The City is already listed as a beneficiary at all the major banks, therefore residents do not need to manually update the City’s banking details.

Residents can simply find “City of Cape Town municipality” listed as a beneficiary on their bank’s website or mobile app and enter their nine-digit municipal account number as a reference.

If residents are unable to do any of the above steps, they should contact their bank or the City’s Call Centre for further assistance.
