Coastal Hire salvages coast

Employees of four Coastal Hire branches along with family, friends and customers did their bit for the environment, getting their hands dirty while clearing litter from Strand Beach on Saturday 21 September.

The clean-up formed part of the initiatives to mark International Coastal Clean-up Day and National Recycling Day, which saw employees of the company’s Somerset West, Stellenbosch, Bredasdorp and Swellendam branches participate in the project, held in partnership with Plastics SA, which assisted with the large-scale clean-up effort on Strand Beach.

“The event was a serious eye opener as well as a highly effective operation, with more than 400 kg of waste collected for the day,” a statement from the company declared.

Coastal Hire also held a competition on the day, awarding R500 gift vouchers and an individual award for the most rubbish collected. The prize was eventually won by Phronesia Zauwah, with a massive 30 kg of refuse to her name. The prize for the most unusual item collected was won by Nelia Swart, who found a suitcase.

John Harcourt-Cooke of Coastal Hire head office reflected on a successful collaborative effort: “Coastal Hire is committed to making a tangible difference in our communities, with practical hands-on solutions.

“It forms part of our bigger commitment, demonstrated through projects within our Responsibility Programme. The Strand Beach clean-up was a great opportunity for Coastal Hire to get involved on the ground, using our people power.”

Coastal Hire is also planning to take on the job of cleaning up the coast around Robben Island next month. A team of 76 will grab their gloves and set about restoring the beach to its natural state.
