Communities without water for days on end

MACASSAR – Residents of Macassar and surrounding areas were without water for several days last week following infrastructure damage at the bulk-water main from Steenbras on Saturday 11 July.

According to a statement from the City of Cape Town, workers of its Water and Sanitation Department worked tirelessly since 22:00 on Wednesday 15 July through to 17:30 on Thursday 16 July to conduct repairs.

“The cause of the infrastructure damage is still being investigated,” the City said, without confirming rumours that the incident was related to vandalism.

Last Friday (17 July) it was stated repairs to the bulk-water main had been completed and teams were monitoring this large diameter pipeline, as it has to be slowly filled up before sufficiently discharging pressure to supply the network with water to the consumers.

“I thank the team for making every effort to complete the repairs in the shortest and safest time possible, over a period of close to 24 hours,” said Xanthea Limberg, Mayoral Committee member for Water and Waste.

“It has been an extremely complex job, from planning to implementation, and has taken many unrelenting hours to complete on site. The team is monitoring the water supply in the affected areas.

“I also want to thank our residents for their patience while the repairs have been underway. The City apologises for any inconvenience caused during this time. However, it is imperative that the water supply infrastructure be maintained effectively to ensure a continued, reliable supply of drinking water to residents.

She asked residents to minimise their water consumption to reduce strain on the water supply to these areas until the water supply has normalised.
