Commuter hygiene upped

Public transport commuters are at the front line of possibly contracting Covid-19 or Coronavirus.

In light of this, the City of Cape Town has implemented various precautionary measures at public transport interchanges (PTIs), taxi ranks and on vehicles operating under its ambit.

“The City implores all taxi commuters, drivers and owners, to work with us in finding ways to mitigate the spread of Covid-19 amid the current pandemic,” said Felicity Purchase, Mayoral Committee member for Transport.

“The risk of contact among passengers is high in minibus taxis because of the proximity in which people sit next to each other. We ask that passengers put their health first and try to avoid full or overcrowded taxis. Commuters should also open the windows to ensure better ventilation.”

Various measures were implemented on the MyCiTi bus service, which is further investigating other options to possibly bring about shortly. These include the provision of hand sanitiser, increasing frequency of fumigation and cleaning practices, limiting the number of standing passengers, and monitoring the demand for the service.

All bus and minibus-taxi passengers are implored to practise the hygiene and travel guidelines:. Open all windows.. Avoid public transport if you are elderly or have underlying health issues.. Do not travel if you have a sore throat or fever.. Wear a protective mask, scarf or buff.. Consider travelling outside peak hours.. Ensure you have the correct taxi fare amount to minimise contact.. Wait for the next taxi if the one ahead is full.. Ensure surface hygiene as far as possible during the commute

Metered-taxi services and the e-hailing industry providers have increased cleaning efforts and provided drivers with hand sanitisers.
