Defence workshops at Lourensford

The Elite Defence Academy (EDA) Helderberg is making 2020 the year of empowerment by hosting several workshops to teach important self-defence techniques.

“In light of the recent increase in violence and crime against women, we have decided to run an awareness, protection and self-defence (APS) workshop for young ladies aged 12 and older, in the hope that we can empower these girls to be able to defend themselves from a young age, should the need ever arise,” said Dominic Conway of EDA, who will present the course along with wife Sam.

The workshop will be held at Life Retreat Studio at Lourensford Estate on Saturday 18 January from 14:00 to 16:00. The cost is R250 per person.

It takes place just in time for those girls starting high school, college or university, or young women going out into the working world for the first time, or those just seeking a way to empower themselves.

Explains Sam: “The workshop, which covers the broader spectrum of teaching women to take care of themselves, deals with everything from identifying different types of date rape drugs, navigation through social media and how to avoid a threatening situation and respond in a threatening situation, and much more. These topics will be covered in a sensitive manner.”

The intense two-hour session will cover basic fundamentals of self-defence and awareness, and will probe awareness and critical thinking in dangerous environments.

The workshop is open to everyone, with a particular focus on girlss aged 12 and older. It is described as a fun exercise that will leave those attending it feeling more confident and empowered, with the knowledge that they can do something to protect themselves and prevent potentially harmful situations.

“We will help you find your inner warrior!” promises Dominic.

EDA will host a second workshop, a Valentine’s Day couples’ self-defence workshop. This is ideal for anyone looking for something a bit different to show their significant other how important they are to them.

It will cover aspects such as defences against grabs, chokes, holds as well as ground defences. This will take place at the same venue on Saturday 15 February. The cost is R350 per couple.

Further upcoming workshops include anti-abduction workshops for children aged five to 13, anti-hijack workshops, women’s self-defence workshops, weapon disarming workshops, where the focus will be on defending oneself against weapon hold-ups, and the use and handling of weapons, aside from other workshops.

More information on these sessions will be shared in the coming months.

All the above techniques are included in the syllabus when signing up for regular classes at Elite Defence Academy.
